Shape games for kids

The Shape Detective link above opens a separate 2D shape game with three activities: Name the shape, Count sides and corners, and Find the matching shapes. Each has eight challenges, its own saved place and a completion sticker. There is no countdown, and a checked answer stays visible until you continue.

The diagrams include rotated examples. Turning a square does not change its shape name. The counting activity asks about straight sides and corners: a circle has neither, while triangles have three of each. The matching activity asks you to select shapes that fit a property, rather than choosing the picture you like best.

The preference deck has ten named pictures: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, diamond, hexagon, star, heart and crescent. Quick play shuffles them into five pairs. Pick one picture from each pair. Every choice is accepted because the question is about your preference.

Tap or click a card, use A or the left arrow for the left card, or B or the right arrow for the right card. The Hear button offers the card’s name through the browser’s available speech. An adult or partner can read names aloud too. The short labels on these pictures are prompts for conversation, not complete mathematical definitions.

The large symbols are the original game pictures. A picture called Diamond is a common visual label in this preference deck; it is not a rule that a turned square becomes a different mathematical shape. Use Shape Detective when you want to practise recognising a shape independently of its colour or orientation.

At the end of a preference run, the results show the choices from that run. The winning picture becomes a collection sticker in the shared sticker book. These records do not measure shape-recognition accuracy. Shape Detective has its own completion stickers for finishing its checked activities.

You can play again with new pairings. Both activities are free to open without an account. Saved game progress and stickers belong to this browser on this device; another browser, cleared storage or another device may not retain them.

Ask which activity the player wants: naming and sorting, or choosing favourites. During preference play, you can name a picture or talk about why someone chose it, without treating a different preference as a mistake. During Shape Detective, look at the outline and use the feedback when needed.

Choose an activity according to the player’s interest and support needs rather than a fixed age or a promised time to finish. Preference picking does not assess understanding or replace practical shape work.
